ACTION ALERT: KEVAN THAKRAR

In order to accommodate the racist extremist Douglas Vinter, Kevan Thakrar was removed from the Close Supervision Centre (CSC) Unit at HMP Whitemoor in April 2019. He was initially held in solitary confinement, before being relocated to the CSC Unit at HMP Full Sutton in September where he suffers small group isolation.

There are currently six other prisoners detained alongside Kevan, three of which have diagnosed serious mental health conditions and have spent years sectioned under the Mental Health Act within High Security Mental Hospitals, and the other three are diagnosed with severe personality disorders.

As well as Amnesty International condemning HMP Full Sutton’s CSC Unit back in 1997 for being inhumane when it went under the name SSU, the prison service’s own Chief Medical Officer identified its failings in 1996 specifically highlighting the detrimental impact of the environment especially upon those with mental health issues.

It must be calculated to destroy the minds of all seven prisoners located there, which is exemplified by the lack of any mental health nurse access to them. Kevan himself suffers with Post Traumatic Stress and was working with the NHS Clinical Psychologist at HMP Whitemoor to complete the required therapy for this, but no provision for this is being made available at HMP Full Sutton.

Kevan has been allocated a prison forensic psychologist named Vikki Bleanch, who has sadistically inflicted punishments upon him for requesting to receive the same private sessions afforded to all others. Psychology is supposed to be voluntary, but it seems the ethics of the Health and Care Professions Council are disregarded by Bleanch. She has openly stated an intent to block Kevan ever obtaining progress at HMP Full Sutton.

One of the prisoners with links to racist extremism tried to assault Kevan there, with his unprovoked attack leading to no sanctions except Kevan himself being subjected to an unofficial punishment segregated regime.

In three months time, Kevan will have completed 10 years in the CSC under such dehumanising and oppressive conditions. As HMP Full Sutton have obstructed his ability to challenge through the courts this mistreatment by arbitrarily baring all of his legal contact phone numbers, and routinely interfering with his mail, Kevan is in need of more external support than ever before.
